The idea of the Nurse Honor Guard and Nightingale Tribute originated in 2003 by the Kansas State Nurses Association, after a nurse's years of service were not recognized at her memorial service. The American Nurses Association approved the Nightingale Tribute in 2005, and it is performed before each membership assembly. The Texas Nurses Association adopted the Nightingale Tribute in 2024, and it is performed during the TNA Annual Meeting.
The Deep East Texas Nurse Honor Guard was founded in 2021, after the death of a much-loved, long-time local nurse. It was discovered, after calling around, that there were no Nurse Honor Guards in the area. Our founder performed the Deep East Texas Nurse Honor Guard's first Nightingale Tribute on October 1, 2021, for her Mother-in-Law, Sherian Durham-Welch.
Mission
The mission of the Deep East Texas Nurse Honor Guard is to recognize and honor fellow nurses who have devoted their lives to the nursing profession and to caring for others.
Vision
It is our vision that the presence of the Deep East Texas Nurse Honor Guard will ease the grief experienced by families and bring comfort in their time of loss.
